SOUTHWEST EXPLORER EVENT #3 STORYLINES:

-Coming off an impressive and confidence building finals placing in the Oceanside Open the previous weekend, Christopher Murnane used the momentum to walk away with his first victory of the NSSA season in the Explorer Mens. Chris ruled the final ripping excellent scores of 8.0 and 7.0 winning it by a 4-point margin.

-Without a doubt, Griffin Colapinto stole the spotlight at this event as he continues to demonstrate that he is one of the hottest young talents in the country. He laid down the hammer grabbing double victories in the Boys 14 & under and upper level Juniors 17 & under division. The two wins were impressive enough but perhaps his biggest achievement of the event was the super heat he put on in his Boys semifinal. He went on a wave rampage netting a near perfect heat score of 18.5 crushing two waves of 9.5 and 9.0. In the same heat, he threw away 8.0 and 7.0 scores!

-Ryland Rubens is on a roll in Explorer competition clinching his second straight victory in the Menehuene division.

-Crosby Colapinto claimed his first career NSSA victory taking the win in the Super Grom final. Crosby, sticking with his backside, got off to an early lead posting a 4.5 score on his opening wave. A couple rides later, he caught the money wave ripping a good 6.5 score, the highest of the final.

-Malibu’s Frankie Harrer continued her climb up the mountain to the season wins record of 30 currently held by Kanoa Igarashi. Frankie is nearly half way there clinching her 13th and 14th victories in the Explorer Girls and Womens divisions.

-Harrer is not the only surfer on momentous pace. Rick Takahashi is going after Courtney Conlogue’s accomplishment of winning five consecutive conference titles (Conlogue’s conference title run in the Southwest Open Womens division went from 2005 through 2009). Takahashi has been crowned conference champ in the Masters for four consecutive years and he is on pace to clinch his fifth this year. He’s clearly on a roll this season nailing his third straight double victory of the season in the Masters and Seniors finals at this event which adds up to a substantial lead in both division rankings. Stay tuned!

- NSSA legend Rick “Rockin Fig” Fignetti turned up the gas at Mission Beach clinching his third straight victory in the DukeDivision and then put the pedal to the metal taking the win in the Super Seniors.

-In the Longboard, Austin Sonnier claimed his first NSSA Explorer win in a close heat over runner up Christian Stutzman. Sonnier is currently leads the Longboard ratings with a 400 point advantage over Jorge Barba.
